Fox River:
This stretch of the river is "Class 1" meaning there
are no rapids to contend with. A gradient of 3.2
feet per mile lends a gentle current.
The river travels generally due south from the Wisconsin
border until Yorkville, then takes a southwesterly course
to the Illinois River. The Dayton dam is 38 feet
tall and the only hydroelectric plant on the river.
Lower Fox River Dells:
Known to be one of the most beautiful
sections of the river in the state of Illinois.
There are many breathtaking riverside cliffs and islands
in this stretch downstream from Hwy 52 to Wedron.
These cliffs are St. Peters sandstone home to nesting
swallows that will swirl about as you pass by.
Also you'll see Blue Herons, Snowy Egrets, Red tail Hawks,
and you may even catch a glimpse of the Bald Eagles living
in the area.
History:
LaSalle discovered the Fox over 300 years ago in 1678.
Meramech Hill - just north of this area, near Silver
Springs State Park is a Native American village where the
French and their allies massacred 300 Fox Indians in 1730.
